Does AmeriHealth Caritas NC Cover Dental? NC Medicaid Dental Explained
Reviewed October 27, 2026. AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina doesn’t cover dental care itself. Dental services are carved out of NC Medicaid managed care, so AmeriHealth Caritas NC members get dental care through NC Medicaid from any dentist who accepts Medicaid. You keep the same dental benefits as other NC Medicaid members, and you use your NC Medicaid ID, not a separate dental plan card.
Quick answer: Yes, you have dental coverage, but it comes from NC Medicaid rather than from AmeriHealth Caritas NC. Adults 21 and older are covered for exams and cleanings every six months, X-rays, fillings, extractions, root canals on front teeth, and dentures with prior approval. NC Medicaid doesn’t cover dental implants, and braces are covered only for members under 21 who meet medical criteria.
Why AmeriHealth Caritas NC doesn’t manage your dental care
NC Medicaid’s fact sheet on services carved out of managed care lists dental services among the benefits members “can get from any provider who takes Medicaid.” AmeriHealth Caritas NC’s own member page says the same: dental services are a benefit you can get only from a Medicaid provider, and you may use a provider outside the plan’s network who takes Medicaid. That’s why the plan’s provider directory isn’t the place to look for a dentist.
The same carve-out applies to the other NC Medicaid Standard Plans, including Carolina Complete Health; see Does Carolina Complete Health cover dental?
What NC Medicaid dental covers for adults
NC Medicaid’s Clinical Coverage Policy 4A sets the dental rules. For members 21 and older, the main covered services are:
| Service | Adult coverage (21+) | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Exams | Covered | Periodic exam once every 6 calendar months |
| Cleanings | Covered | Once every 6 calendar months |
| X-rays | Covered | Full-mouth or panoramic once every 5 years; bitewings once every 12 months |
| Fillings | Covered | Amalgam (silver) and composite (tooth-colored); cosmetic work isn’t covered |
| Extractions | Covered | Routine and surgical extractions without prior approval |
| Root canals | Front teeth only | Root canals on premolars and molars are covered only under 21 |
| Crowns | Limited | Composite, prefabricated and temporary crowns; bridges, inlays and onlays aren’t covered |
| Dentures | Covered with prior approval | One complete denture per arch every 10 years; one partial per arch every 8 years |
| Implants | Not covered | Policy 4A lists implant services as not covered by Medicaid |
| Braces | Not covered for adults | Orthodontics only under 21, with prior approval |
The policy limits services by how often you can get them rather than by an annual dollar cap. Your dentist can tell you whether a service needs prior approval.
Does AmeriHealth Caritas NC cover dental implants?
No. NC Medicaid’s dental policy lists implant services as not covered, and AmeriHealth Caritas NC doesn’t add implant coverage. If you’re missing teeth, ask your dentist about dentures, which NC Medicaid covers with prior approval.
Does AmeriHealth Caritas NC cover braces?
Only for children and young adults under 21. NC Medicaid’s orthodontic policy (Clinical Coverage Policy 4B) requires prior approval and a review of how severe the problem is. There’s no orthodontic coverage for adults 21 and older.
Does NC Medicaid cover root canals for adults?
Yes, but only on permanent front (anterior) teeth. Root canals on back teeth (premolars and molars) are covered only for members under 21.
Dental coverage for children under 21
Members under 21 have broader coverage through Medicaid’s Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit. Under EPSDT, medically necessary dental care can be covered even beyond the usual policy limits, including root canals on back teeth and, when the criteria are met, braces.

If you also have Medicare
If you have both Medicare and NC Medicaid, dental coverage depends on your Medicare plan. Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine dental care, but many Medicare Advantage plans, including Dual Special Needs Plans, add dental benefits. Compare plans during Medicare Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026. AmeriHealth Caritas also runs Medicaid plans in other states, such as AmeriHealth Caritas Ohio and AmeriHealth Caritas DC, and their benefits differ.
