How to Change Your Address With Social Security and Medicare
Reviewed October 1, 2026. To change your address for Medicare, you update it with Social Security. Medicare uses the address on your Social Security record, so one change covers both, even if you don’t collect Social Security benefits yet. You can do it online in your my Social Security account, by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or at a local Social Security office. Railroad Retirement beneficiaries update their address with the Railroad Retirement Board instead.
Quick answer: Update your address with Social Security first. Then tell your Medicare Advantage, Part D or Medigap company separately, because private plans keep their own records. If you move out of your plan’s service area, or to an area with new plan options, you get a Special Enrollment Period to change plans.

Step-by-step: change your address online
- Go to ssa.gov and sign in to your my Social Security account (or create one with Login.gov or ID.me).
- Select My Profile.
- Choose the option to update your mailing address, enter the new address and confirm.
- Save or print the confirmation page for your records.
If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security says you can’t currently change your address online. You can still review your information in My Profile, but you’ll need to call or visit an office to make the change.
Why Medicare uses your Social Security address
Medicare.gov explains: “To change your official address with Medicare, you have to contact Social Security (SSA).” It adds that this applies “even if you don’t get Social Security benefits” (Medicare.gov). Your Medicare card, Medicare Summary Notices, the yearly Medicare & You handbook and any Part B premium bills all go to the address on file with Social Security.
Your Medicare.gov account is still useful: you can log in there to update your phone number or email address, but not your mailing address.
If you get benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board
If you get Medicare through the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), contact the RRB to update your information. The RRB’s toll-free number is 1-877-772-5772. You can also use your myRRB account or a local RRB field office (RRB.gov).
Tell your Medicare plans separately
Updating Social Security doesn’t automatically notify private insurance companies. Contact each plan you have, using the member services number on your card:
- Medicare Advantage plan (Part C)
- Medicare drug plan (Part D)
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy
- Any dental, vision or hearing policy
This matters because plans mail ID cards, formulary updates and your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) each fall. If your plan has the wrong address, you could miss notice of premium or coverage changes for 2027. Some members have lost drug coverage after missing premium bills, so keep your plan’s billing address current.
Moving? You may be able to change plans
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are tied to service areas. If you move, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (Medicare.gov):
- You move out of your plan’s service area: you can switch to a new Medicare Advantage plan or drug plan, or go back to Original Medicare if you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan.
- You move within your area but have new plan options: you can switch plans too.
- Timing: your window starts when you move and lasts for 2 full months after. If you tell your plan before you move, it can start the month before your move.
If you’re moving in the fall, you can also use Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026, to pick a plan for January 1, 2027. Our annual Medicare plan review checklist walks through what to compare.
Original Medicare and Medigap work anywhere in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, so you don’t have to change them because you moved, although Medigap premiums are set by location and your company may reprice your policy.
Changing your name with Medicare
A name change also goes through Social Security. You’ll generally need to request a corrected Social Security card and provide proof of the legal name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order. Once Social Security updates your record, you can get a Medicare card with your new name. See how to replace your Medicare card and how to print your Medicare card online.
After you update your address
- Watch for confirmation from Social Security and check that your next Medicare mail arrives at the new address.
- Set up mail forwarding with the U.S. Postal Service while the change processes.
- Confirm your plan has the new address and that premium payments are still going through.
- If you pay your Part B premium by mail, your next bill should show the new address.
- Keep your Medicare number handy. If you can’t find it, see how to find your Medicare number.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to tell Medicare if I change my address?
You update your address with Social Security, and Medicare uses that record. You don’t need to make a separate address change with Medicare, but you do need to tell any Medicare Advantage, Part D or Medigap plan you have.
Can I change my address with Social Security online?
Yes, if you’re already getting benefits or have Medicare and can sign in to a my Social Security account. Use My Profile to update your mailing address. SSI recipients need to call or visit an office.
What is the Social Security phone number for a change of address?
1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
Can I change my address with Medicare by calling 1-800-MEDICARE?
1-800-MEDICARE can answer questions, but your official address is kept by Social Security. Contact Social Security, or the RRB if you get railroad benefits, to change it.
Will my Medicare Advantage plan change when I move?
Not automatically. If your new home is outside your plan’s service area, you’ll need to choose a new plan during your Special Enrollment Period, or you’ll be moved to Original Medicare.
How do I get my SSA-1099 if I moved?
Once your address is updated, future forms go to the new address. You can also download a replacement any time from your online account. See how to get your SSA-1099 online.
