What is TeamCare?
TeamCare is the trade name the Central States, Southeast and Southwest Areas Health and Welfare Fund has used since 2014. The fund was founded in 1950 and is run by a board of union and employer trustees. TeamCare says it covers about 500,000 members from 1,100 employers (TeamCare: About).
It’s an employer and union health plan, not a Medicare or Medicaid plan. Benefits include medical, prescription, dental (with Humana Dental), vision (with EyeMed), short-term disability and retiree health plans (TeamCare: Benefits).

TeamCare and Medicare
If you’re turning 65 or retiring with TeamCare coverage, the key questions are how your TeamCare coverage works with Medicare and whether its drug coverage counts as creditable.
- Retiree plans: TeamCare lists retiree health plans for eligible retirees, including Medicare-related options offered with Humana. Call 1-800-TEAMCARE to confirm what your retiree plan includes.
- Drug coverage and Part D: If you delay Medicare Part D, your employer or union drug coverage must be creditable to avoid a late penalty. Your plan should send a creditable coverage notice each year. See creditable coverage and Medicare.
- Who pays first: Whether Medicare or TeamCare pays first depends on whether you’re still working and the size of the employer. Our guide to Medicare coordination of benefits explains the rules, based on Medicare.gov’s who-pays-first guidance.

Not the same as Medicaid “Team Care” programs
Some state Medicaid programs use the name “Team Care” for something different. In Montana, for example, Medicaid Team Care is a program for members who use more services than average. Those members must get primary care from one assigned provider and prescriptions from one pharmacy, and they keep their Medicaid benefits (Montana Medicaid Team Care fact sheet). If your letter came from a state Medicaid agency, contact that agency, not the Central States TeamCare plan.
