SSA-1099: How to Get Your Social Security 1099 Form Online

Updated October 1, 2026
Social Security card used to get a Form SSA-1099 online

Reviewed October 1, 2026. Form SSA-1099, the Social Security Benefit Statement, is the tax form that shows how much Social Security you received in a year. Social Security mails it every January. If you lost it or never got it, you can download a replacement from your my Social Security account starting February 1, or request one by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Quick answer: Sign in at ssa.gov, choose “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S,” pick the tax year and download it. Replacements are available for any of the past 6 years in which you were paid benefits. People who only get SSI don’t receive an SSA-1099, and noncitizens get Form SSA-1042S instead.

What is a Social Security 1099 form?

The SSA-1099 “shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return,” according to the Social Security Administration. It is not a bill and you don’t send it back. You use it, or give it to your tax preparer, when you file your federal return.

What the boxes on Form SSA-1099 mean

BoxWhat it shows
Box 3Total benefits paid to you during the year, including amounts withheld from your checks
Description of amount in Box 3A breakdown of what’s in Box 3, such as payments received, Medicare premiums deducted, voluntary federal tax withheld and any overpayment recovery
Box 4Benefits you repaid to Social Security during the year
Box 5Net benefits for the year (Box 3 minus Box 4). This is the amount you report on your tax return
Box 6Voluntary federal income tax withheld

Why your SSA-1099 shows more than you actually received

If your Medicare Part B premium (and any Part D premium or IRMAA) is taken out of your Social Security check, those deductions still count as benefits paid to you. That’s why Box 3 can be higher than the deposits in your bank account. The Medicare premiums deducted are listed in the description under Box 3. For 2026, the standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month (CMS). Learn more in how much Medicare is taken out of Social Security.

Other ways to get a replacement SSA-1099

Replacements requested by phone or mail go to the address on your Social Security record, so make sure it’s current first. See how to change your address with Social Security and Medicare.

When will I get my SSA-1099?

Social Security mails SSA-1099 forms each January for the prior year’s benefits. Your form covering 2026 benefits will arrive in January 2027, and the online replacement for tax year 2026 will be available starting February 1, 2027. If you haven’t received it by early February, download it online rather than waiting.

Who doesn’t get an SSA-1099?

Is Social Security taxable?

It can be. The IRS compares your “combined income” (your adjusted gross income, plus nontaxable interest, plus half of your Social Security benefits) with base amounts of $25,000 for single filers and $32,000 for married couples filing jointly. Above those amounts, up to 50% of benefits may be taxable, and above $34,000 (single) or $44,000 (joint), up to 85% may be taxable (IRS Publication 915). A tax professional can tell you how this applies to you.

Your income also affects Medicare. The income on your tax return from two years earlier is used to decide whether you pay IRMAA on top of the standard Part B and Part D premiums. See 2026 IRMAA brackets and how to request a reduction.
