What Does MCNA Dental Cover for Adults? Coverage by State
Reviewed October 14, 2026. What MCNA Dental covers for adults depends on your state. MCNA runs Medicaid dental programs for adults 21 and older in Idaho (Idaho Smiles) and, for certain groups, in Louisiana. In Texas and in Florida Healthy Kids, MCNA serves children, so most adults there get dental benefits another way or not at all. Where adults are covered, benefits focus on exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions and dentures, and braces are generally not covered for adults.
Quick answer: Idaho Medicaid adults get enhanced dental benefits through MCNA with no adult benefit maximum, according to MCNA. Louisiana adults 21+ can get dentures, relines and repairs through the Adult Denture Program, and adults in certain waivers get broader care. Texas Medicaid adults 21+ are not in MCNA’s children’s dental program. Call MCNA’s member line for your state to confirm what your plan covers.

MCNA adult dental coverage in Idaho
MCNA is Idaho’s statewide Medicaid dental plan. Idaho’s Department of Health and Welfare says Medicaid-eligible adults 21 and older get Enhanced dental benefits whether they are on the Basic, Pregnant Women’s or Enhanced plan. (Idaho DHW: Dental) In a December 29, 2025 update, MCNA said “there is no benefit maximum for adults.” (MCNA Idaho program update)
Idaho’s rules list adult coverage for preventive and diagnostic care, exams, restorative care (such as fillings), periodontics, prosthodontics including dentures, and oral surgery, with endodontics covered only with limitations. The state rule says root canals and crowns are not covered for adults, while MCNA’s general member page lists root canals among its services, so confirm with MCNA before treatment. MCNA adult dental coverage in Louisiana
In Louisiana, MCNA is one of the Medicaid dental plans and serves adults in three programs. (MCNA Louisiana members)
- Adult Denture Program: for Medicaid adults 21+ (limited-benefit groups such as QMB-only and SLMB-only aren’t eligible). It covers exams, X-rays when needed for an authorized denture, complete and partial dentures, relines and repairs. The Louisiana Department of Health’s services chart allows one complete or partial denture per arch in an eight-year period; a 2026 draft manual shows five years, so ask MCNA which limit applies to you. (LDH Medicaid Services Chart)
- Adult Waiver Dental: for adults in the New Opportunities, Residential Options or Supports Waiver. Covers diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, periodontic, prosthodontic, oral surgery and some other services under specific policy guidelines.
- Adult ICF/IDD: for adults in intermediate care facilities for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Check the program’s member handbook for details.
MCNA in Texas: adults vs children
Texas HHSC says dental plans like MCNA serve most Medicaid clients 20 years of age and younger. (Texas HHSC: Texas Health Steps dental) Medicaid adults 21 and older don’t receive dental care through these children’s dental plans; adult dental is handled through Texas Medicaid itself and is limited. Adults in the STAR+PLUS waiver can get dental services up to $5,000 a year, excluding cosmetic dentistry. (STAR+PLUS Handbook 6500) For children’s orthodontics, see does MCNA Dental cover braces in Texas.
Does MCNA Dental cover braces for adults?
Generally no. Medicaid orthodontic coverage is for children and teens under 21 when braces are medically necessary. Idaho’s rules list orthodontics only under children’s benefits. One narrow exception: Louisiana’s Adult Waiver Dental service list includes orthodontic services, subject to strict policy guidelines. Medicare doesn’t cover braces either; see does Medicare cover orthodontics.
Does MCNA cover dentures for adults?
Yes, in Idaho (prosthodontics and dentures are listed adult benefits) and in Louisiana through the Adult Denture Program and Adult Waiver Dental. Prior authorization and replacement limits apply.

If you have Medicare and Medicaid
Original Medicare doesn’t cover most routine dental care. If you’re dual eligible, your state Medicaid dental benefit may apply, and many 2027 Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans include dental extras. Compare plans during Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026. See Medicaid vs Medicare and UnitedHealthcare dental 2027.
