UnitedHealthcare Dental Coverage for Medicare Members (2026)
Reviewed October 10, 2026. UnitedHealthcare dental coverage for Medicare members usually comes built into a UnitedHealthcare or AARP Medicare Advantage plan. Most plans cover preventive care such as exams, cleanings and X-rays at $0 in-network, and some plans, or an optional rider you pay extra for, add fillings, crowns, root canals and dentures up to a yearly limit. What you get depends on your plan and county.
Quick answer: Several 2026 AARP Medicare Advantage plans we checked cover preventive dental only, at a $0 copay. On those plans, the optional Platinum Dental Rider costs $44 a month and adds $1,500 a year for covered dental services, with $0 preventive care and 50% coinsurance for comprehensive care. Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental care. Your plan’s Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage list your exact benefits.

How UnitedHealthcare dental works in Medicare Advantage
UnitedHealthcare says its Medicare Advantage dental benefits can include two kinds of care:
- Preventive services: oral exams, routine cleanings, X-rays and fluoride treatments.
- Comprehensive services: fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, bridges and dentures.
UnitedHealthcare also lists no annual dental deductible and access to a large national dental network, while noting that dental benefits and the provider network vary by plan and local market. In practice, UnitedHealthcare plans fall into three groups:
| Plan type | What’s usually covered |
|---|---|
| Preventive-only plan | Exams, cleanings, X-rays and fluoride, often at $0. No fillings, crowns or dentures unless you add a rider. |
| Plan with a dental allowance | Preventive care plus a yearly dollar amount for comprehensive services, often with coinsurance. |
| Plan plus the optional rider | You pay an extra monthly premium for a set yearly dental maximum that replaces the plan’s built-in dental benefit. |
A UnitedHealthcare dental provider notice also says that starting January 1, 2026, comprehensive Medicare Advantage dental plans added coinsurance to non-preventive services, and preventive-only plans no longer cover periodontal maintenance cleanings. 2026 UnitedHealthcare dental plan examples
Here’s what four 2026 plans list in their Summaries of Benefits. These are examples only; your plan may differ.
| Plan (2026) | Built-in dental benefit |
|---|---|
| AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC TX-0001 (PPO), H1278-003-000 | Preventive only, $0 copay, no deductible. Platinum Dental Rider available. |
| AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC NC-0011 (HMO-POS), H5253-103-000 | Preventive only, $0 copay in or out of network, no deductible. Platinum Dental Rider available. |
| AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC GA-5 (HMO-POS), H5322-047-002 | Preventive only, $0 copay, no deductible. Platinum Dental Rider available. |
| AARP Medicare Advantage Patriot No Rx KS-MA01 (PPO), H8768-025-000 | $1,500 a year for all covered dental services; $0 preventive; 50% coinsurance in-network for fillings, crowns, bridges and dentures. Any dentist, but out-of-network dentists may bill more. |
The UHC Platinum Dental Rider
Some UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans let you buy extra dental coverage for a monthly premium. UnitedHealthcare calls it the Platinum Dental Rider (people often search for it as the “UHC dental platinum rider”). In the 2026 Summaries of Benefits for the TX-0001, NC-0011 and GA-5 plans above, the rider:
- Costs $44 a month on top of your plan premium
- Pays up to $1,500 a year for covered dental services, in and out of network combined
- Covers network preventive care at a $0 copay
- Covers network comprehensive care, including fillings, crowns, root canals, dentures, bridges and extractions, at 50% coinsurance
- Replaces any dental benefit already in your plan
Not every plan offers the rider; the 2026 Patriot KS-MA01 summary doesn’t mention one. Older UnitedHealthcare rider materials say you can add it when you enroll or within a set window after your coverage starts, by calling the number on your member ID card or through the Coverage & Benefits section of the member website, with coverage starting the next month. Confirm the current enrollment window with UnitedHealthcare before you count on it.
Is the rider worth it?
Do the math with your own dental plans. The rider costs $528 a year ($44 x 12). If you only need two cleanings and an exam, a preventive-only plan already covers those at $0. If you expect a crown or a denture, the rider pays half of the cost up to $1,500 for the year, so it can be worth it. For example, if a crown costs $1,200 in-network, 50% coinsurance means you pay $600 and the rider pays $600, plus you’ve paid $528 in rider premiums. Ask your dentist for the in-network fee before deciding.
Finding a UnitedHealthcare dentist
- Sign in to your UnitedHealthcare member site or app and search for dentists in your plan’s network.
- Or use the dentist search linked from UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare dental page.
- Call the office and ask whether they’re in network for your specific Medicare Advantage plan, not just “UnitedHealthcare.”
- Ask for a treatment estimate before major work.

What Original Medicare covers for dental care
Medicare.gov says Original Medicare doesn’t cover most dental care, including cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions and dentures. It may cover dental services that are tied to other covered medical care, such as:
- Dental services when you’re a hospital inpatient
- Dental exams and treatment before a heart valve replacement or an organ, bone marrow or kidney transplant
- Removing a mouth infection, for example by extracting a tooth, before cancer treatment such as chemotherapy
- Treating complications of head and neck cancer treatment
- Exams and treatment to remove an infection before and during dialysis for end-stage renal disease
For covered services you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). A UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan must cover these services too. Read more in Medicare Advantage dental coverage.
UnitedHealthcare dental plans for seniors with Original Medicare
If you keep Original Medicare, with or without a Medicare Supplement plan, you can buy individual dental insurance. UnitedHealthcare One sells dental PPO plans underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company or UnitedHealthcare Life Insurance Company. UnitedHealthcare One says:
- Annual maximums range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the plan
- Some plans have no waiting period for preventive, basic or most major services; implant coverage has a waiting period
- Plans can be bought year-round, and coverage varies by state
- Dental discount cards are not insurance

UnitedHealthcare dental in 2027
UnitedHealthcare announced its 2027 Medicare Advantage plans on October 1, 2026. It said dental, vision and hearing benefits help support whole-person health, but it didn’t publish plan-wide dental changes. Your 2027 Annual Notice of Change and Summary of Benefits show your plan’s dental coverage and any rider price for next year. During Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7, 2026), check:
- Whether the plan covers preventive only or also comprehensive care
- The yearly dental maximum and coinsurance for fillings, crowns and dentures
- Whether an optional rider is offered and what it costs
- Whether your dentist is in network for that plan
