Wellpoint Dental: Medicaid Coverage by State, Providers and 2027 Dual Plans
Reviewed October 19, 2026. Wellpoint dental coverage depends on your state and your plan. In some states Wellpoint covers Medicaid dental itself through a dental partner (New Jersey uses LIBERTY Dental, West Virginia uses SKYGEN). In others, the state runs dental separately, so your dentist is found through a state dental plan rather than Wellpoint (Texas children, Tennessee, Maryland and Iowa). Wellpoint’s Medicare dual plans (D-SNPs) add their own dental allowance, such as $2,250 or $2,750 a year on two 2027 Texas plans.
Quick answer: If you have Wellpoint Medicaid, find your state below to see who handles your dental care and which number to call. If you have a Wellpoint Medicare Advantage or Dual Advantage plan, check the “Dental” rows of your 2027 Summary of Benefits for the yearly allowance. Wellpoint is the new name for Amerigroup in several states, so older cards and letters may still say Amerigroup.

Wellpoint and Amerigroup: what changed
Elevance Health renamed its Amerigroup plans Wellpoint starting in January 2024 in Arizona, Iowa, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. (Elevance Health) Wellpoint’s “States We Serve” page now lists Medicaid plans in Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. (Wellpoint: States we serve) Wellpoint doesn’t run Florida Medicaid; in Florida it lists individual and family plans only.

New Jersey (NJ FamilyCare)
Wellpoint’s New Jersey member handbook lists dental as “Covered by Wellpoint” and says, “We contract with LIBERTY Dental to manage your dental benefits.” Find a dentist in LIBERTY’s Wellpoint directory at libertydentalplan.com/wellpoint or call LIBERTY Dental at 833-276-0848.
Texas (STAR, STAR Kids, CHIP and STAR+PLUS)
Texas HHS says most children and teens with CHIP or Children’s Medicaid “get their dental services through a managed care dental plan.” (Texas HHS) Wellpoint tells STAR members age 20 or younger and CHIP and STAR Kids members to “call your dental plan provider to find a dentist near you.” If your child needs braces, see does MCNA Dental cover braces in Texas.
Adults 21 and older aren’t in those dental plans. Wellpoint offers some adult dental as a value-added service. For example, a Wellpoint notice for STAR+PLUS members (non-dual, not in a nursing facility) says that from September 1, 2024, “the benefit is now two cleanings, one checkup and one set of X-rays each year.” Value-added services can change each September, so check Wellpoint’s current Texas list before you book. (Wellpoint TX notice) Wellpoint TX Member Services: 833-731-2160 (TTY 711); STAR Kids 844-756-4600.
Tennessee (TennCare)
TennCare announced that “Renaissance will manage all dental benefits for TennCare members” beginning November 1, 2025. TennCare’s dental page says adult members have dental benefits and children are covered until age 21. Call Renaissance at 866-864-2526 to find a dentist. (TennCare: Dental services)
Maryland
Wellpoint’s Maryland handbook says, “Dental services are provided by the Maryland Healthy Smiles Dental Program administered by SKYGEN USA.” Maryland says everyone with full Medicaid coverage is eligible. Call Healthy Smiles at 855-934-9812.
Iowa
Iowa HHS says dental benefits for most Iowa Medicaid members are provided through the Dental Wellness Plan, and “all members can choose Delta Dental or DentaQuest.”
How to find a Wellpoint dental provider near you
- Check who handles your dental care using the table above. If the state carves dental out, use that dental plan’s directory.
- Use the right directory. In New Jersey, use LIBERTY Dental’s Wellpoint directory. In other states, use your state Wellpoint page’s provider search or the Sydney Health app, or the state dental plan’s search tool.
- Call before you book. Confirm the dentist accepts your plan and is taking new patients.
- Bring your ID cards. You may have a separate dental ID card from the dental plan.
Wellpoint Medicare and dual plan dental (2027)
Wellpoint also offers Medicare Advantage plans, including Dual Advantage plans (HMO D-SNPs) for people with both Medicare and Medicaid. Elevance Health’s October 1, 2026 announcement of its 2027 plans says that, “depending on the plan, members may have access to dental, vision and hearing care.” (Elevance Health 2027 Medicare plans)
Two 2027 Texas examples from Wellpoint’s Summaries of Benefits:
| Plan (ID, area) | 2027 dental benefit |
|---|---|
| Wellpoint Dual Advantage (HMO D-SNP) H8849-020-002, Texas (Lubbock, Potter, Randall and other counties) | “Up to a $2,250 allowance for covered preventive and comprehensive dental services every year” |
| Wellpoint Dual Advantage (HMO D-SNP) H8849-020-003, Texas (Ector, Midland, Kerr and other counties) | “Up to a $2,750 allowance” every year; 2 exams, 2 cleanings, 2 fluoride treatments and 2 X-rays at $0 |

For 2026, Washington’s Health Care Authority lists Wellpoint Full Dual Advantage (HMO D-SNP) H1894-002-000 with “up to a $3,500 allowance” for dental services every year and Wellpoint Dual Advantage H1894-011-000 with a $2,400 allowance. (WA HCA, 2026) Check the 2027 Summary of Benefits for those plans before you enroll.
Original Medicare doesn’t cover most routine dental care, so for people with Medicare, dental comes from a Medicare Advantage plan, Medicaid or a separate dental policy. If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, read Medicaid vs. Medicare to see how they work together. You can change Medicare plans during Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026.
Wellpoint dental insurance for people without Medicaid
Wellpoint also sells individual and family plans in some states. Those are separate from Medicaid, and dental coverage depends on the policy you buy. Check the plan’s benefit summary for waiting periods and yearly maximums.
