Utah Medicaid Income Limits 2026: Who Qualifies and How to Apply
Reviewed October 5, 2026. Utah Medicaid eligibility depends mostly on your household income compared with the federal poverty level (FPL). Adults ages 19 to 64 qualify for Utah’s Adult Expansion Medicaid with income up to 133% of the FPL, which works out to about 138% once the standard 5% income disregard is applied. Using the 2026 federal poverty guidelines, that’s roughly $1,835 a month for one person or $3,795 a month for a family of four.
Quick answer: Utah’s Department of Workforce Services (DWS) decides eligibility. Pregnant women and children can qualify at higher incomes, and children in families earning too much for Medicaid may qualify for CHIP. You can apply online through myCase at jobs.utah.gov, in person, or by calling 1-866-435-7414.

Utah Medicaid income limits for 2026
The table below applies Utah’s eligibility percentages to the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines (Federal Register, January 15, 2026). These are Medicare365 calculations, rounded to the nearest dollar, to help you estimate. Utah DWS publishes its official limits and may update them on its own schedule, so confirm with DWS before relying on an exact figure.
| Household size | Adult Expansion (138% FPL), monthly | Pregnant (144% FPL), monthly | CHIP (200% FPL), monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,835 | $1,915 | $2,660 |
| 2 | $2,489 | $2,597 | $3,607 |
| 3 | $3,142 | $3,278 | $4,553 |
| 4 | $3,795 | $3,960 | $5,500 |
| 5 | $4,448 | $4,642 | $6,447 |
| 6 | $5,101 | $5,323 | $7,393 |
| 7 | $5,755 | $6,005 | $8,340 |
| 8 | $6,408 | $6,686 | $9,287 |
| Each additional person | add $653 | add $682 | add $947 |
How we got the percentages: Utah DWS’s own examples show a family of four qualifying for Adult Expansion Medicaid at $3,458 a month, for pregnancy Medicaid at $3,614 and for CHIP at $5,200 (Utah DWS myDoorway). Those match 133%, 139% and 200% of an earlier year’s poverty guideline. Medicaid rules then add a 5% income disregard for most income-based groups, which is why the effective limits are about 138% and 144%. Pregnancy counts the unborn child in household size.
Utah Medicaid programs and who they cover
| Program | Who it’s for | How income is counted |
|---|---|---|
| Adult Expansion Medicaid | Adults 19-64 who don’t qualify for another Medicaid group or Medicare | Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), up to 133% FPL plus 5% disregard |
| Parent/caretaker relative Medicaid | Parents or relatives caring for a child | MAGI, with its own lower limit |
| Child Medicaid and CHIP | Children under 19 | MAGI; CHIP covers children in families above the Medicaid limit up to about 200% FPL |
| Pregnancy Medicaid | Pregnant women, with coverage after the birth | MAGI, about 139% FPL plus 5% disregard |
| Aged, blind and disabled Medicaid | People 65 and older or with a disability, including many people on Medicare | Non-MAGI rules with income and asset tests |
| Medicare Savings Programs | People with Medicare and limited income | Separate income and asset limits |
What counts as income
For Adult Expansion, children’s, parent and pregnancy Medicaid, Utah uses MAGI, the same income method used for Marketplace coverage. In general it includes:
- Wages and self-employment earnings (after business expenses)
- Unemployment benefits
- Taxable Social Security benefits, pensions and retirement withdrawals
- Interest, dividends and rental income
It generally doesn’t include child support received, SSI, veterans’ disability benefits or most gifts. Household size usually follows your tax filing household. Aged, blind and disabled Medicaid uses different rules, including limits on savings and other assets.
Examples
- Single adult, age 40, earning $1,700 a month: under the estimated $1,835 Adult Expansion limit, so likely eligible if other rules are met.
- Family of four earning $4,800 a month: over the Adult Expansion limit for the parents, but the children may qualify for CHIP, which goes up to about $5,500 a month.
- Pregnant woman in a two-person household (counting the baby) earning $2,500 a month: under the estimated $2,597 pregnancy limit.

Changes coming in 2027
Federal law passed in 2025 requires many expansion adults to show 80 hours a month of work or other community engagement, and to renew every six months, starting by January 1, 2027. People 65 and older, people with Medicare, pregnant women, people with disabilities and parents of children under 14 are exempt. Read what the 2025 Medicaid changes mean for you.
If you’re on Medicare in Utah
Adult Expansion Medicaid doesn’t cover people enrolled in Medicare. If you have Medicare and limited income, you may qualify for aged, blind and disabled Medicaid, a Medicare Savings Program that pays your Part B premium, or Extra Help with drug costs. See Medicare Savings Programs income limits and Extra Help income limits.
