UnitedHealthcare Vision Coverage for Medicare Members (2026)
Reviewed October 9, 2026. Many UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans, including AARP Medicare Advantage plans, add routine vision care that Original Medicare doesn’t cover: typically a yearly routine eye exam at $0 in-network, standard prescription lenses, and an allowance toward frames or contact lenses. You use the UnitedHealthcare Vision network, and the exact allowance depends on your plan and county.
Quick answer: On three 2026 AARP Medicare Advantage plans we checked, the benefit was a $0 in-network routine eye exam once a year plus a $150 allowance every 2 years for frames or contacts, with standard lenses at no cost. Your plan’s Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage list your exact amounts. Original Medicare covers medical eye care, not routine exams or glasses (except one pair after cataract surgery).

How UnitedHealthcare vision coverage works for Medicare members
UnitedHealthcare says its Medicare Advantage plans may include a routine eye exam at no cost and free standard prescription lenses, including single vision, bifocal, trifocal and Tier I (standard) progressive lenses. Members can also buy eyewear from online providers, including Warby Parker and GlassesUSA. Benefits vary by plan and area, and limitations, exclusions and network restrictions may apply.
| Benefit | How it usually works in UHC Medicare Advantage |
|---|---|
| Routine eye exam | Often $0 in-network, once a year |
| Standard lenses | Often $0 (single vision, bifocal, trifocal, standard progressive) |
| Frames or contacts | An allowance, such as $150 every 2 years on the plans below |
| Upgraded lenses | Copays on some plans |
| Network | UnitedHealthcare Vision network; out-of-network eyewear is your cost on many plans |
| Medical eye care | Covered like Original Medicare Part B, with your plan’s copays |

UnitedHealthcare Vision network and finding a provider
UnitedHealthcare’s plan documents describe the UnitedHealthcare Vision network as one of Medicare Advantage’s largest national networks of vision and retail providers. UnitedHealthcare’s individual vision plans are administered by Spectera, Inc., which is why you may still see the Spectera name on older materials. To find an eye doctor or store:
- Use the provider locator linked from UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare vision page (medicare.myuhcvision.com).
- Or sign in to your UnitedHealthcare member site or app and search for vision providers.
- Call the office to confirm they’re in the UnitedHealthcare Vision network for your plan before your appointment.
Online, UnitedHealthcare names Warby Parker and GlassesUSA as places to use your eyewear benefit. Many people also ask whether stores like America’s Best take their plan; see our guide to whether America’s Best takes Medicare or Medicaid.
What Original Medicare covers for your eyes
Medicare.gov says Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine eye exams for glasses or contacts. Part B does cover some medical eye care, and a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan must cover these too:
- Glaucoma tests: once every 12 months if you’re at high risk (for example, you have diabetes or a family history of glaucoma, are African American and 50 or older, or are Hispanic and 65 or older). You pay 20% after the Part B deductible.
- Diabetic eye exam: once a year for diabetic retinopathy; 20% after the deductible.
- Macular degeneration: certain tests and treatments, including some injectable drugs; 20% coinsurance.
- Cataract surgery: covered, and after each surgery with a conventional intraocular lens, one pair of eyeglasses with standard frames or one set of contact lenses. You pay 20% after the deductible, plus any cost for upgraded frames.

UnitedHealthcare vision insurance if your plan has no vision benefit
If you have Original Medicare (with or without a Medigap plan) or a Medicare plan without vision benefits, UnitedHealthcare also sells individual vision plans through UnitedHealthcare One, underwritten by Golden Rule Insurance Company. UnitedHealthcare says these plans are available to people of all ages, cover annual eye exams with no waiting period, and help pay for glasses and/or contacts. Compare the premium with what you’d spend on an exam and glasses each year. Our overview of dental, vision and hearing insurance choices explains the options.
Vision benefits in 2027
UnitedHealthcare announced its 2027 Medicare Advantage plans on October 1, 2026, and says dental, vision and hearing benefits are part of its plans’ whole-person approach. It hasn’t published plan-wide vision changes, so allowances for 2027 are in each plan’s 2027 Summary of Benefits. Members will also get a separate Member ID card and an enhanced UCard starting in 2027. If you’re comparing plans during Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7, 2026), check:
- How often the routine exam is covered and the copay
- The eyewear allowance and how often it renews (yearly or every 2 years)
- Whether contacts are included and what upgraded lenses cost
- Whether your eye doctor is in the UnitedHealthcare Vision network
