UnitedHealthcare Hearing Aids 2027: Coverage, Allowances and How to Get Them

Updated October 19, 2026

Reviewed October 19, 2026. UnitedHealthcare hearing aid coverage comes through the hearing benefit in many UnitedHealthcare and AARP Medicare Advantage plans, delivered by UnitedHealthcare Hearing. Most plans include a $0 routine hearing exam in network. For 2027, several plans we checked switched from a per-hearing-aid copay range to a flat dollar allowance, such as a $700 allowance for up to 2 hearing aids a year. Your exact benefit depends on your plan and county.

Quick answer: Original Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids, so UHC hearing aid coverage comes from your Medicare Advantage plan. Check the “Hearing” rows of your plan’s 2027 Summary of Benefits for the exam copay, the hearing aid allowance or copay, and how many aids it covers (per year or every 2 years). Hearing aids generally must come from a UnitedHealthcare Hearing network provider. You can change plans during Medicare Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027.

Hearing aids, which many UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans cover through UnitedHealthcare Hearing

How UnitedHealthcare hearing aid coverage works

UnitedHealthcare delivers the hearing benefit in its Medicare Advantage plans through UnitedHealthcare Hearing, which UnitedHealthcare says brings together EPIC Hearing Healthcare and hi HealthInnovations. UnitedHealthcare Hearing’s Medicare page says Medicare Advantage members “get a no-cost hearing exam and consultation” and lists three steps: check your plan benefits, find a provider, and choose hearing aids. 2026 vs 2027: what changed for UHC hearing aids

In 2026, many UnitedHealthcare plans priced hearing aids as a copay range per device. For example, the 2026 Summary of Benefits for AARP Medicare Advantage Extras from UHC AR-7 (HMO-POS), H2802-078-000, lists “$199 – $829 copay for each OTC hearing aid” and “$199 – $1,249 copay for each prescription hearing aid,” with “up to 2 hearing aids every year.”

For 2027, the plan pages we checked on uhc.com show a dollar allowance instead. Here are examples from official UnitedHealthcare plan pages and Summaries of Benefits. Benefits vary by plan and county, so use these only as examples.

What this means for you: With a copay range, your cost depended on the technology level you chose. With an allowance, the plan pays up to a set amount and you pay anything above it. A $700 allowance covering up to 2 aids may not cover two premium devices, so ask the provider for the full price before you order. The 2027 plan pages describe the benefit as “brand-name prescription hearing aids”; if you want over-the-counter hearing aids, check your plan’s Evidence of Coverage to see whether the allowance can be used for them.

What Original Medicare covers

Original Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids. Medicare.gov says: “Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids or exams for fitting hearing aids,” and “you pay all costs for non-covered services, including hearing aids and exams.” (Medicare.gov: Hearing aids)

Part B does cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams when a provider orders them to see whether you need medical treatment. After you meet the Part B deductible, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. You can also see an audiologist once every 12 months without an order for certain conditions. (Medicare.gov: Hearing and balance exams) For the bigger picture, read does Medicare cover hearing aids.

How to get hearing aids with a UnitedHealthcare plan

  1. Check your benefit. Look up the 2027 hearing rows in your Summary of Benefits, or sign in at uhchearing.com/Medicare to see your plan’s hearing benefit.
  2. Find a UnitedHealthcare Hearing provider. Use the provider search on uhchearing.com or call UnitedHealthcare Hearing at 1-855-523-9355 (TTY 711).
  3. Book your hearing exam. Many plans cover a routine exam at $0 in network.
  4. Choose hearing aids. Ask what the plan pays (copay or allowance), what you’ll owe, and what follow-up visits, batteries and warranty are included.
  5. Use the benefit before it resets. Some plans renew yearly, others every 2 years, so note when your next pair is covered.

Over-the-counter hearing aids

Since October 17, 2022, the FDA has allowed over-the-counter hearing aids for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. They can be bought “without the need for a medical exam, prescription, or a fitting adjustment by an audiologist.” (FDA: OTC hearing aids) Some 2026 UHC plans set a separate copay range for OTC aids; for 2027, check whether your plan’s allowance applies to them. If your hearing loss is severe, or you have pain, drainage or sudden hearing loss, see a doctor rather than buying OTC devices.

UHC hearing aids and your other benefits

Hearing is one of several extras in UnitedHealthcare plans. Compare it with the plan’s UnitedHealthcare dental coverage, UnitedHealthcare vision coverage and the UHC OTC catalog and UCard. For fitness, see Renew Active. If you’re comparing AARP PPO plans, read our guide to AARP Medicare Advantage PPO plans for 2027.

UnitedHealthcare’s October 1, 2026 announcement of its 2027 plans says dental, vision and hearing benefits “help support whole-person health,” but it doesn’t list hearing aid amounts, so always check the plan’s own documents. (UnitedHealthcare: 2027 Medicare Advantage plans)

Choosing a 2027 plan with hearing coverage

During Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7, 2026), compare the hearing benefit alongside the things that usually matter more: your doctors, your drugs, the premium and the out-of-pocket maximum. When you compare hearing benefits, look at:
