Aetna Medicare Dental 2027: Coverage, Implants and Plans for Seniors
Reviewed October 18, 2026. Aetna Medicare dental coverage comes through Aetna Medicare Advantage plans. For 2027, Aetna says all of its Medicare Advantage plans include dental, eyewear and hearing aid benefits, with $0 routine dental exams in network. How much more than checkups and cleanings a plan covers (fillings, crowns, dentures, implants) depends on the plan and its yearly dental allowance.
Quick answer: Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental care. If you have or choose an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan, check the “Dental” section of its 2027 Summary of Benefits for preventive costs, comprehensive coverage and the annual allowance. Some plans let you buy extra dental coverage, called an Optional Supplemental Benefit (OSB), for an added monthly premium. If you’re 65 or older and don’t want Medicare Advantage, Aetna also sells individual Aetna Dental Direct plans. Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, 2026.

What Aetna Medicare dental covers in 2027
In its October 2026 announcement of 2027 plans, Aetna (a CVS Health company) said: “All our plans include dental, eyewear and hearing aid benefits with $0 routine dental, hearing and eye exams in network.” (CVS Health, October 2026)
Aetna’s Medicare dental pages explain what that usually means:
- Preventive care: “Many plans cover preventive care. Including oral exams, cleanings and X-rays.”
- Comprehensive care: some plans also cover fillings, extractions, crowns and other comprehensive services, and “Not all plans offer full comprehensive dental coverage.”
- A cap: “Your plan may have a cap on coverage for comprehensive care,” usually shown as a yearly allowance.
- Network: “Most dental benefits use the Aetna Dental® PPO network.” Some PPO and HMO-POS plans let you see any licensed dentist in the U.S., usually at a higher cost.
- Not covered: cosmetic work such as teeth whitening.

| Aetna dental option | Who it’s for | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Dental built into an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan | Members of that plan | Usually $0 in-network preventive care; comprehensive care up to the plan’s yearly allowance |
| Dental Optional Supplemental Benefit (OSB) | Members of plans that offer it | An added monthly premium; for example, 50% coinsurance in network for fillings, extractions, crowns, dentures and bridges under the 2027 Deluxe EPO Combo OSB |
| Aetna Dental Direct (individual dental insurance) | Anyone who buys it, including people on Original Medicare | Monthly premium; annual maximums of $1,000 to $2,000 on PPO plans, no maximum on the DMO |
2027 plan example: Aetna Medicare FIDE (HMO D-SNP)
Dental allowances are set plan by plan, so always check your own plan. One 2027 example published on aetna.com:
| 2027 plan | Dental benefit | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Aetna Medicare FIDE (HMO D-SNP) H9771-001, Illinois (for people with both Medicare and Medicaid) | $3,000 annual allowance for covered preventive and comprehensive dental services; $0 in-network check-ups, preventive, restorative and emergency care (prior authorization may be required); dental provided through DentaQuest | No extra premium to join |
Many Aetna Medicare Advantage plans that aren’t special needs plans have a smaller comprehensive allowance, and some cover only preventive care. Compare the dental section of each 2027 Summary of Benefits, or the plan’s Evidence of Coverage, side by side before you enroll.
Aetna dental Optional Supplemental Benefit (OSB)
A dental OSB is extra dental coverage you can add to some Aetna Medicare Advantage plans. Aetna says you can add it within 30 days of your plan’s start or renewal date, or during an enrollment period, and that “You’ll pay an additional monthly premium for a dental OSB.” (Aetna: Understanding dental benefits)
Aetna’s 2027 flyer for the Deluxe EPO Combo OSB says:
- $0 for covered preventive services with an Aetna Dental PPO network dentist
- 50% coinsurance in network for fillings, extractions, crowns, dentures and bridges, up to a set dollar amount each plan year
- You must use an Aetna Dental PPO network dentist; out-of-network care isn’t covered
- “Orthodontics, implants and implant-related treatments are not covered with the OSB”
- Questions: 1-833-570-6670 (TTY 711), 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week
(Aetna 2027 Deluxe EPO Combo OSB flyer) The premium and allowance aren’t printed in the flyer, so ask for them before you sign up.
Does Aetna dental cover implants?
It depends on the plan, and many designs exclude them. The 2027 Deluxe EPO Combo OSB above excludes implants and implant-related treatment. Original Medicare doesn’t cover implants either. If implants matter to you, look for “implants” in the plan’s Evidence of Coverage or dental schedule of benefits, ask Aetna whether the procedure codes are covered, and check whether the yearly allowance is large enough. An implant often costs more than a typical allowance.
Aetna dental insurance for seniors outside Medicare Advantage
If you keep Original Medicare, perhaps with a Medigap plan, you can buy individual dental insurance. Aetna sells Aetna Dental Direct plans:
| Aetna Dental Direct plan | Starting price | Annual maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred 2000 PPO | From $29/month | $2,000 |
| Preferred PPO | From $26/month | $1,250 |
| Core PPO | From $22/month | $1,000 |
| DMO | From $17/month | No annual maximum |
Aetna says there’s no waiting period for preventive care. Waiting periods often apply to basic and major work on PPO plans, but can be waived if you had continuous dental coverage within 90 days of enrolling. Aetna Dental Direct: 1-855-837-6453, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
How to find an Aetna Medicare dentist
- Go to Aetna’s Medicare provider search.
- Search as a guest or log in, choose plan year 2027 and your plan type, and enter your ZIP code.
- Filter for dentists, then call the office to confirm it’s in your plan’s dental network for 2027.
Aetna notes that networks can change during the year. Some plans, like the Illinois FIDE D-SNP above, use a different dental vendor (DentaQuest), so check the dental phone number on your member ID card.

Does Original Medicare cover dental?
Medicare.gov says: “In most cases, Medicare doesn’t cover dental services like routine cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, or items like dentures and implants,” and you pay all costs for non-covered services. Some dental care tied to certain covered medical treatments is an exception. (Medicare.gov: Dental services) See why dental coverage with Medicare is limited.
Comparing Aetna with other carriers
