Azithromycin and Covid 19

At this point in time, Azithromycin is being studied in the medical field to see if it affects the Coronavirus disease. The use of Azithromycin or a Z-pak is mainly for bacterial infections. Infections can range from bronchitis and pneumonia to STDs or sexually transmitted diseases. However, this medicine cannot be used to treat the common cold or the flu.

Does Medicare Covers Azithromycin

Medicare does cover this drug, and depending on which company you choose such as Aetna, AARP, Cigna, etc. each one has its own prices for the Part D plan. Not only that, but the pharmacies also have different prices for the prescribed drug Z-pak. CVS, Walgreens, and other pharmacies accept all kinds of Medicare coverage, but I would call in just to make sure that whichever one you have can be used there.

Which Medicare Part Covers Azithromycin

Medicare Part D is the plan that covers any prescription drug-related medicines and you pick whether you want a Medigap plan or choose an HMO or PPO. To sum it up HMOs save you money, cover more for medication, and have lower copayments, but a smaller network. PPOs have a larger network, are state and or nationwide, are easy to use and you would not need a referral in order to see a specialist. Remember all Medicare companies listed above like Cigna, Humana, AARP, etc. carry the same plans, just make sure to see which company is the better one for you and fits in the budget.

Conclusion

While in the hospital for a covid 19 response, the medicine they give you will be Medicare part b, not a prescription.  If you get an Azithromycin prescription with your Aetna Medicare part d plan it should be covered with a small copayment.  Many part d plans will have a deductible or a copayment for a Z-pak, so your Azithromycin won’t be free either.
