Phantom Pain and trying to make sense of it

Phantom Pain and trying to make sense of it

I first want to say that by looking at the title of this post, you might think that I am the one experiencing phantom pain.  I want to say upfront that this is not the case at all.  I have been researching chronic pain and came across this.  I never knew what phantom limb pain was until I went to the AdSense keyword search and put in pain searches. The phrase phantom pain jumped out at me.

What is it? Why would someone feel the pain that isn’t there?  Then I started thinking to myself… I have a son who is in college ROTC for the army, and he could possibly know someone or something about phantom limb pain. I asked his ROTC friends if they knew about it, and of course, they did.  I am 46 years old and don’t know anything about the subject—what a crock. I should be more aware and do my research, so here it is.

Is phantom pain an acute pain that people feel or chronic pain?  If you can give me some insight on this subject, please do.  I think we should all learn a little more about Phantom limb pain.  I’m sure we don’t know much.

Why I am talking about it

I work with Medicare supplemental plans. I am a Medigap insurance agent for companies like Aetna and AARP. I have never come across Phantom limb pain. I never knew it existed.  Many veterans are on Medicare, and I have them as clients. They sometimes use Medicare part D prescription plans, but most get their drugs from the VA. If the medicine is a concern for them, I will help them. When they want to sign up for Medicare, I help them, but I haven’t seen PLP. Aetna and Humana can help these people. Do they? Does AARP have special programs? AARP lobbies congress members about Medicare and veterans but do they help with Phantom limb pain?
